Pluto Lenyap di Praha
The Fact :
Sidang Majelis Umum Serikat Ahli Ilmu Falak Dunia (International Astronomical Union) di Praha, Republik Cek, pada 24 Agustus 2006 "menghapus" Pluto dari daftar planet dalam tata surya. Pluto dianggap tidak memenuhi kriteria sebagai planet. Orbitnya tidak sebidang. Massa-nya terlalu kecil untuk menghasilkan gaya tarik yang sanggup menahan bentuk permukaannya hingga tak cerai berai. Diameter Pluto hanya 2.306 km (bandingkan dengan bumi yang 12.746 km atau Jupiter yang 138.346 km) dengan jarak ke matahari 5,9 miliar km. Pluto butuh waktu 248 tahun untuk mengelilingi matahari (bumi butuh 365 hari). Pluto ditemukan pertama kali oleh astronom Amerika Clyde Tombaugh pada tahun 1930. Tombaugh meninggal tahun 1997 dan berharap abunya bisa dilabuhkan di benda langit temuannya itu. Pluto kini menyandang status baru : planet kerdil. (sumber : Majalah Tempo)
The Lessons :
Pengetahuan manusia dibanding alam semesta ciptaan Allah sungguh sangat terbatas. Maka aneh kalau kita begitu pongah dengan segala pencapaian dan prestasi kita. Betapa pun kita ini kecil di hadapan alam. Setiap pencapaian harusnya membuat kita makin tunduk dan luruh dalam sembah syukur kepada-Nya. Seperti padi yang makin berisi makin runduk. Atau seperti kata tag-line iklan mobil, if you already on the top, the only way to up to the next level, is down to earth.

I do not think the issue of man's arrogance is relevant to Pluto. It is simply a reclassification due to the re-definition of the term 'planet'. It was triggered by the discovery of three bodies which were similar to Pluto in size and orbit. So it was a tricky situation - either add the three to the existing nine planets, or declassify Pluto as a planet. Hence the heated debate. So the issue is nothing more than semantics for the astrology community. For me, honestly, I couldn't care less.
But even if this somehow represents a major achievement, people like me still wouldn't be going around patting ourselves in the back. We certainly will not be standing at the bow of cruise ship, shouting 'I'm the king of the world!!!'.
Yes, we do marvel at our achievements, but only in context of where we were before, and where we can be in the future. The greater the potential benefit to us all, the greater the achievement. It has nothing to do with man's triumph over God.
If anyone should think otherwise, it suggests to me a sense of insecurity.

Sorri, baru respon komen. Kelewat. Komenmu bagus. Saya ok banget. Mungkin saya agak kurang pas mengkalimatkannya ya. Betul anda. Soal pluto yang mau di redifinisi sebagai planet, ga ada kaitannya dengan arogansi manusia.
Tapi rasanya kita sepakat, bahwa pencapaian iptek tidak boleh membuat manusai menjadi sombong. justru harusnya makin membuat kita sadar betapa luar biasanya Tuhan, pencipta alam semesta ini. Bukan begitu?
